Dear Parishioners (new and old),
Welcome to our home on the Internet!
We, the priests of St. Mary's Catholic Church would like to thank you
for showing interest in our parish community and we welcome you. We
have a wonderful parish here in the heart of historic Marietta. We have
been worshipping, praying, and working diligently to build up the
Kingdom of God here on earth since 1838. As a matter of fact, the very
first Mass that was offered in the Northwest Territory was said here in
the city of Marietta along the banks of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers.
Since 1838 we have been a welcoming community to newcomer and lifelong
member alike, it is our sincere hope that your experience of St. Mary's
is that we are a "parish family" striving for our common goal, which is
Heaven in union with Christ who is our Risen Lord!
We boast a magnificent church building and an outstanding Catholic
School, which is located on the corner of Fourth and Marion Streets.
However, this parish is more than brick and mortar, rather what makes
this church a church are the people who make it up-the living stones of
St. Mary's. Our parish does not exist for itself, rather our mission is
modeled after the very commission of Jesus Christ to His Disciples at
the end of St. Matthew's Gospel, "Go therefore and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded
you" (Mt. 28:19-20). All followers of Christ, including all of us here
at St. Mary's are called to teach, to witness to the Gospel of Christ to
our children, to those preparing to enter more fully into the Church's
sacramental life, and to those who are alienated from the Church
community.
All members of St. Mary's are called upon to share their individual
gifts and talents based on our Lord's command to not hide our gifts
under a bushel basket, but rather to set them on a lamp stand to
enlighten the world around them. It is our hope that if the Lord has
blessed you with a gift that you use it not just in the world in which
you live and work, but also here at St. Mary's to help us to continue
our great mission.
Your presence in our parish is very enriching for us, because you add
another facet to the Mystical Body of Christ present here at St.
Mary's. May God continue to bless you and keep you, may He look upon
you with kindness and give you His peace. If there is anything that you
need, please do not hesitate to call upon one of the parish priests or
any members of the staff. May God continue to bless you and your
family!
In everything give glory to God,
Rev. Msgr. J. Michael Campbell, Pastor
Rev. Fr. Seth T. Wymer, Parochial Vicar
